A bariatric doctor, also known as a bariatrician, is a medical doctor who specializes in the treatment of obesity and weight management. Bariatric doctors help patients lose weight through nonsurgical methods such as dietary changes, increased physical activity, behavioral therapy, and medications. They develop customized weight loss plans tailored to each patient's needs and preferences.
Unlike bariatric surgeons who perform weight loss surgeries like gastric bypass, bariatric doctors focus on nonsurgical weight loss treatments. However, they may advise patients on bariatric surgery if needed. To become a bariatric doctor, physicians complete additional specialized training and often take board certification exams in bariatrics after finishing medical school.
Bariatric doctors can diagnose and treat obesity-related conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. They aim to promote long-term weight loss and improve patients' overall health.
